Area Guide

Great Smoky Mountains

Those who think the Great Smoky Mountains are in Tennessee are not even half right. North Carolina encompasses more than half of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and most of that is in Swain County.
In fact, one of the most beautiful areas in the National Park is just a few minutes outside Bryson City. Deep Creek has more fun
things to do than any other area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Smoky Mountain Trains Museum

Feel like a kid again at the Smoky Mountain Trains Museum!

Complimentary admission to the Smoky Mountain Trains Museum with any train ticket purchase!

Smoky Mountain Trains is more than an ordinary museum. With its collection of 7,000 Lionel™ engines, cars and accessories, impressive operating layout, children’s activity center, and gift/toy shop, Smoky Mountain Trains has something for everyone.

Mountain Layers Brewing Company

Our brewery and taproom feature two bars: one on the main level built around the brewhouse and another upstairs where you can drink on the outdoor deck overlooking downtown. The dream of opening a brewery comes after a 30 year career in public service so we are incorporating that background into this project through an Honor and Remember Wall, a tribute to our military veterans and first responder

Three Waterfalls Hike

One of nature’s most majestic phenomenon is the waterfall. Whether towering miles above or gently careening down a tumble of rocks right at eye level, these beautiful, natural cascades can’t help but stir a sense of wonder within. In Bryson City, nestled amongst the Great Smoky Mountains, we are surrounded by the comforting rush and stunning beauty of several waterfalls. Some are right in our backyard, while others require taking a short drive further down the road. In our handy guide, we’re breaking down the best and most beautiful falls you can explore, whether nearby or a further stretch away.

The Tunnel To Nowhere

The Fontana Dam, rising high above the Little Tennessee River in western North Carolina, is the tallest dam in the eastern United States. It was a long and winding road to getting the dam built, and what was lost during the journey can be seen in the nearby “Road to Nowhere.”

Cooper Creek Trout Farm & Pond

Cooper Creek Trout Farm and Trout Pond rest peacefully on 70 acres of pristine North Carolina Mountain splendor. Cooper Creek, numerous branches (little streams), springs, waterfalls and two ponds bring pure Smoky Mountain water tumbling over the property.

Tsali Recreation Area

Enjoy mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, motorized boating, kayaking or camping at Tsali Recreation Area, all located within steps of Fontana Lake.

Follow the Trail. The Tsali (pronounced “SAH-lee”) Recreation Area’s four-loop trail system has become a popular destination for mountain bikers and horseback riders. It is best known as a challenging mountain bike course.

Swain County Heritage Museum

Located in the 1908 historic courthouse in downtown Bryson City, North Carolina, the Swain County Heritage Museum tells the story of Swain County and its people. Through photos, exhibits and video you will learn about the life of early settlers; and how the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Fontana Dam rewrote the landscape and changed lives. You will enjoy seeing the restored log cabin porch, the 1887 church organ and one-room schoolhouse desks, plus children’s activity area among other items. There is not an admission charge, however donations are accepted. Restrooms are accessible.

Appalachian Rivers Aquarium

Located on the Tuckasegee River, the Appalachian Rivers Aquarium exhibits as many regional species of non-game and game fish as possible among its fourteen tanks, with a total exceeding 4,000 gallons of water. In addition to those tanks, there are two terrariums and a hellbender exhibit to showcase the variety of amphibians and reptiles in the Southern Appalachians, currently including frogs, turtles, and several species of salamanders.
